Born a slave. Made free by the Proclamation of Emancipation. Inspired by the desire for freedom, he joined the Union Army under Sherman in December 1861. While on their march to the sea and after faithful service at the close of the war came north with Capt. J.M. Randall. He gained the confidence and regard of all who knew him. (illegible) integrity and self respect. He was about 30 years of age, and died Jan. 17, 1871.
